ORCUS FINALLY MAKES GOOD AFTER VARIOUS REVERSES REVERSESRegisters Registers by Three Lengths in Opening Race at Detroit DetroitDETROIT DETROIT Mich June 13 Orcus roan threeyearold son of Jean II Grudge rac ¬ ing under the silks of C A ONeill Jr and well ridden by jockey Pat Milligan scored an easy threelength victory in the first race of six furlongs at the Detroit Fair Grounds today Second honors went to J Zitniks Sister Polly which was two and onehalf lengths before Mrs E O McLeods Answered at the final marker markerThe The race was marred by a fall when James C Ellis Rio Cado went down soon after the start Apprentice R G Jones who had the mount on the Ellis racer suffered a frac ¬ tured collar bone and was removed to High ¬ land Park General Hospital Jones who rode his first winner at the recent Churchill Downs meeting was not seriously injured aside from the broken bone according to track McQueenEleven physician Dr Malcolm McQueen Eleven went to the post for the sprint and when the start came Joe Greenock had the best speed away from the stalls with Peg ¬ ging Pete in closest pursuit Sister Polly was a wellplaced third and moved along in determined fashion while the ultimate win ¬ ner was fifth Sister Polly moved up ap ¬ proaching the stretch and displaced Pegging Pete which was caught in close quarters and had to be taken back Entering the home lane Sister Polly enjoyed a length margin over Orcus but the latter responded readily to good urging and an eighth from the fin ¬ ish he took command and drew out steadily to the close closeOrcus Orcus favored in the wagering paid 760 and stepped the distance over the heavy track in 115 115Ten Ten ordinary platers met in the second race a sixfurlong sprint and it resulted in an easy threelength victory for J M Grieves Chestnut Bur The favored Saphi finished second and was four lengths ahead of Radio Gold which closed stoutly to earn minor honors Jimmy Green had the mount on the winner and allowed his charge to work his way up steadily while being outrun to the stretch Jobelle which had good speed through the first half mile held a length ad ¬ vantage at the final turn with Saphi in closest attendance and the ultimate winner fifth Turning for home Saphi opened up a length and onehalf advantage on Chestnut Bur but the latter had something left and after a brief duel he drew out to win in easy fashion
