Nelson Dunstan, president of the New York Turf Writers Association, presented Mrs. Weir with a trophy in the winners circle, while trainer Jim Ryan and jockey Smithwick were regaled with champagne in the press box, along with several other notables of both sexes. Eolus took a step at the start of the Cup and tried to make a runaway affair of the long race, while Smithwick rated Clive of India near the rear ranks for six furlongs, then moved up gradually until he was in fourth place midway of the backstretch. At that point, Eolus led Hyvania by a couple of lengths, with Syracuse Lad a close third, a little more than a length before the ultimate winner. Eolus continued to lead to the final hedge, while Hyvania dropped back and Syracuse Lad and Clive of India stormed on the pacemaker. Smithwick had to veer toward the inside with Clive of India and charged up between the leader and the odds board to take command in front of the place pool and draw away in the final yards. Syracuse Lad hung a bit at the end, while Hyvania tired. Joseph Brant finished fairly well, along with Quiet. Jockey Smithwick had to put on the rubber suit and hit the road for two hours this morning to make the 142 pounds he carried on Clive of India, the power failure having put the "hot box" out of commission. It was Mrs. Weirs fourth victory in the New York Turf Writers Cup series. A. J. Colandos Uncle Miltie took a step on the comeback trail today, weaving his way between horses near the finish of the Turf and Field Handicap to triumph by a neck over Woolford Farms Saxony, who finished very fast on the outside. Hudson Valley Stables Mighty Quest was a little less than a length farther back at the end of the mile and a length and a half before Phantom Farms Nullify. Mrs. Ben F. Whitakers Hitex, the favorite, tired badly after forcing the early pace and finished seventh. Eddie Arcaro rode Uncle Miltie, who was scoring his first victory of the year in his second attempt and stepped the mile in 1:37V5 over a track that had dried to be termed "good" after being slow in the early part of the afternoon. The son of Heather Broom — Twink-Mo, by Mokatam, who was the juvenile champion of 1950 and a disappointment last year, paid .20.
