Wideners Eve-l ning Out scored a game, and popular vic-r tory in the filly division of the National Stallion Stakes today, outfinishing Maine Chance Farms Fascinator in a furious drive to triumph by a head. Darby Dan Farms Clear Dawn was three and a half lengths behind the embattled leaders and a scant neck before Elmendorfs Anegada at the end of the five furlongs on the Widener Course. Timed in :56H Evening Out was solidly favored by the crowd of 21,357 and paid .50 after step-i ping the distance in :56%, fastest time of the meeting, aided slightly by a quarter-i ing tailwind. Evening Out is a handsome daughter of Shut Out — Evening Belle, by Eighty Thirty, who was bred by Mrs. Wide-i ner and had won the Fashion Stakes for her only other start. Ovie Scurlock was again in the saddle and had to ride a powerful finish to dispose of Fascinator. Mr. Widener won the filly division of the National Stallion with Sungari in 1950. Foxcatcher Farms Winterfur stumbled at the start of the National Stallion, ap- pearing to bother Evening Out slightly, while Fascinator was away very fast and soon took command. Evening Out recov- ered quickly and set sail for the leader, followed by Anegada, Superupper and When in Rome, who were closely grouped. Tops was actually first away from the gate, but quickly dropped back, while Clear Dawn, Mainsail and Sitting Duck were sluggish. Fascinator had a slight lead, but was bearing out slightly as Evening Out charged at her and the two went under the wire locked together, with the favorite responding to strong urging to shove her head in the van. Clear Dawn, who had been racing in sixth place, finished willingly, taking third money from Anegada in the final strides, while Mainsail made a weak bid at the end to be fifth. Neither of the Vanderbilt fillies, Sitting Duck and When in Rome, showed anything, though the first-named was bothered somewhat by Fascinator at the start, while Mainsail also appeared to be crowded a bit as Fascinator bore to her right coming away from the gate. After the race, Hedley Woodhouse said that Fascinator, who seemed to be laying over on Evening Out, was actually trying to bear to her left at this stage of the dash. There were three spills, but no casualties to man or beast, in the Arc Light Steeplechase. Rokeby Stables Benbow lost John Cotter in the backstretch, while F. Am-,bros Clarks Night Patrol fell at the next-to- last fence, and Bayard Tuckerman, Jr.s, Blandystone fell over him. Jockeys Pat Smithwick and Evan Jackson were unhurt. L. H. Nelles Extra Point went on to score his second straight at the meeting, Ramon Harris whipping him all the way to the wire seven lengths before John M. Schiffs Montadet, who led Mill River Stables Monkey Wrench a half dozen lengths. Courtney Burtons Hunting Fox was the favorite, but jumped poorly and lacked speed all the way. Extra Points paid .20 as second choice. Hedley Woodhouse won both ends of the Daily Double, taking the,, opener on W. Haggin Perrys Clint McCray, and the second race on Stephen Messanas First Wing. They returned 5.40 in the combination wagering. Clint McCray took the opener by a length and a half over Philip Godfreys Walter A. Yokel, paying .30 and stepping the straight five furlongs in :58ys. He was haltered for ,000 by Edward Seinfeld, while Bill Williams took the unplaced Aconite from Rokeby Stable for the same price.
